Multiple criteria lead to multiple cognition, and multiple cognition causes disagreement, and disagreement is not good for Muslims; as God has said: ﴿وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا ۚ[1]; “Hold firmly to the rope of God all together and do not become divided,” and this is also evidence that the rope of God is one; because if it was multiple, holding firmly to it would not lead to unity, but it would itself be a factor for division!

Moreover, it should be noted that the truth has a single and indivisible nature; because in its reality, it is nothing but the existence that has a simple[2] essence incapable of becoming multiple, and this requires the unity of its cognition and, accordingly, the unity of its criterion of cognition. In other words, the truth is the creation or the legislation of God originated from His inherent unity, and therefore, there is no variation in it, and one cannot find it various; as God has said regarding His creation: ﴿مَا تَرَى فِي خَلْقِ الرَّحْمَنِ مِنْ تَفَاوُتٍ ۖ[3]; “You do not see any discrepancy in the creation of God,” and said regarding His legislation: ﴿وَلَوْ كَانَ مِنْ عِنْدِ غَيْرِ اللَّهِ لَوَجَدُوا فِيهِ اخْتِلَافًا كَثِيرًا[4]; “If it had been from anyone other than God, they would surely have found in it many variations.” Therefore, the truth, whether it is God’s creation or legislation, has one existence incapable of becoming multiple, and anything other than that is considered falsehood; as God has said: ﴿فَمَاذَا بَعْدَ الْحَقِّ إِلَّا الضَّلَالُ ۖ[5]; “Then what is after the truth but falsehood?!”

As a result, the truth is one; because it has one origin, and that which is one requires one cognition, and one cognition needs one criterion.

Deniers of the unity of the truth and its criterion of cognition

The unity of the truth, its cognition, and the criterion necessary for its cognition is one of the essential issues, doubting which does not make any sense. However, there have been some people who have doubted it and even denied it since a long time ago.

[Sophists]

As an example, it is said that in ancient Greece, there was a group who did not see the truth as a single existence and considered it dependent on the opinion of the human being.
