like someone who has built his foundation on the sand, and it may sink into it at any time; or like someone about whom God Almighty has said: ﴿أَمْ مَنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَانَهُ عَلَى شَفَا جُرُفٍ هَارٍ فَانْهَارَ بِهِ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ ۗ[1]; “Or someone who has built his foundation on the weak edge of a cliff that suddenly falls into the fire of Hell.”

Intellect; the criterion of cognition

The human being is a distinct animate being, and the reason for his distinction is the power hidden in his self that makes him able to know his benefit and loss more than any other discovered animate being so that he may increase his survival by achieving his benefit and prevent his decline by avoiding his loss. This hidden power is “the intellect”. There is no doubt that the human being’s body is not sufficient for his superiority over other creatures; because compared to the body of many of them, the human being’s body is weaker and more vulnerable and has no special and considerable advantage. His soul, in the sense of an unknown power that makes him move and grow physically, is also like the souls of other animate beings and cannot be sufficient for his superiority over other animate beings that move and grow physically like him. The only thing that exists in the human being and does not exist in other creatures is the intellect which has the ability to comprehend general concepts and conform them to detailed examples and, with an effort called “thinking”, finds its way from what it knows to what it does not know. Perhaps this power exists in other animate beings as well, but it is definitely stronger in the human being, and for this reason, it has made him dominant over other animate beings. If there were an animate being that understood more than the human being, it would undoubtedly have dominated the human being and made him serve itself, whereas this has not happened, and the human being’s domination over other animate beings is evident. This superiority of the human being is only the result of his intellect, and there is no other privilege for him. Therefore, a human being who lacks the intellect or does not use it enough has no superiority over other animate beings, but rather he is inferior to them;
