as He has said: ﴿لَا يَنَالُ عَهْدِي الظَّالِمِينَ[1]; “My covenant does not reach the oppressors”; because it is contrary to God’s wisdom and justice that He will have a person who is not able or qualified to communicate His rulings because of his being afflicted by some of these matters, mediate in the communication of His rulings, and therefore, He does not do so, and this means the necessity of the infallibility of the Prophet.

[Possibility of oversight of the Prophet]

Nevertheless, to be fair, the Prophet’s fall into various types of oversight that do not disrupt the communication of the rulings of God does not conflict with his infallibility; such as forgetting personal matters, making mistakes in permissible matters, rushing to do permissible matters, being unable to do normal matters, being unaware of unnecessary matters, or failing in involuntary actions such as falling asleep during waking hours; because such shortcomings are requirements of humanity that are common between the Prophet and others; as God Almighty has said: ﴿قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ[2]; “Say: ‘I am only a human being like you,’” and it is clear that being free from such shortcomings is possible for God alone, Who is the True Perfect, and there is no perfect being other than Him, and He alone deserves glorification, and the Prophets are not gods like God, nor are they glorified as He is glorified; as He has said: ﴿وَلَا يَأْمُرَكُمْ أَنْ تَتَّخِذُوا الْمَلَائِكَةَ وَالنَّبِيِّينَ أَرْبَابًا ۗ أَيَأْمُرُكُمْ بِالْكُفْرِ بَعْدَ إِذْ أَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ[3]; “And He does not command you to take the Angels and the Prophets as gods; does He command you to disbelief after you are Muslims?!” Rather, the Prophets are human beings who know everything that a human being can and must know, and they avoid everything that a human being can and must avoid, and therefore, it is not permissible to exaggerate about them by elevating them to a rank that exceeds human ability so that they would be considered free from any error, forgetfulness, and negligence; as belittling them by attributing to them actions that are contrary to piety, modesty, and chastity is getting deviated from the truth and not permissible.
