because on the one hand, a scholar in Islam is one who fears God; as God Almighty has said: ﴿إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ ۗ[1]; “Only scholars fear God from among His servants,” and therefore, His servants who do not fear Him are not considered scholars, and on the other hand, most of them imitate previous scholars and issue fatwas within the scope of their sects, while an imitator is certainly not considered a scholar, and this is something about which there is no dispute.

[Impossibility of imitating scholars based on imitating them]

However, many Muslims, especially in countries such as Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon, believe that it is obligatory for every Muslim to pick a marja‘ from among them to imitate him, and think that taking action without doing so is false and unacceptable while the reason of most of them for this belief is the fatwa of their scholars on it, and this means imitating them based on imitation, which is a false and meaningless cycle; because certainly, imitation is contrary to the natural principle and, accordingly, not without the need for reason, and its reason cannot be based on itself; so there is no choice but to practice ijtihad in imitation, while they are often imitators in their imitation; because they do not know any reason for it from Sharia or the intellect except for an illusion that has been created for some of them, which is that imitating scholars is from this aspect that intellectuals go to the expert, while this illusion is far from reality; because in the opinion of intellectuals, the expert varies depending on the subject that they go to him for it, and in their opinion, an expert in Sharia is one going to whom leads to certainty for them, such as the Messenger of God not one going to whom just leads to conjecture, such as mujtahids; considering that in religious affairs, contrary to customary and worldly affairs, certainty is the subject and necessary; while naturally, going to other than God and those who speak on behalf of Him does not lead to certainty and, consequently, is not rational.
