like the Arabs before Islam who considered their tribe as the criterion of the truth and supported it, even though it was unjust, and also after Islam, they pursued inauspicious political rivalries with Banu Hashim in the same spirit, which led to the eruption of disagreements after the demise of the Prophet and the bloody events in the first Islamic centuries, which still live on today in a different form.

[The origin and consequences of fanaticism]

It is perceptible and experienced that fanaticism toward something makes the human being blindly support it and confront its opponents through polemics, lies, and oppression; while polemics, lies, and oppression, though they may silence its opponents, do not convince the intellect and have no value in its scales; as God Almighty has said about their people: ﴿يُجَادِلُونَكَ فِي الْحَقِّ بَعْدَمَا تَبَيَّنَ كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى الْمَوْتِ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ[1]; “They dispute with you about the truth after it has become clear, as if they are being driven to death with their eyes wide open,” and said: ﴿فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرَى عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا لِيُضِلَّ النَّاسَ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ[2]; “Then who is more oppressive than one who attributes lies to God to mislead people with things other than knowledge?! Indeed, God does not guide the group of oppressors.”

It appears that fanaticism is a combination of ignorance and passions; because a fanatic, on the one hand, is ignorant about his nation, sect, or party, in the sense that he does not know its flaws, and on the other hand, his heart is so attached to it, to the extent that he is not willing to know its flaws, but rather, with a baseless dogmatism, he does not consider its flaws possible. Therefore, when its flaws are identified, he becomes upset and reacts emotionally. There is no doubt that this state obstructs cognition of the truth, yet it is prevalent and evident among Muslims; because many of them, due to their unfamiliarity with the weaknesses of their beliefs and their attachment to them,
